Whether at a lake, the seaside or an outdoor swimming pool – with the right knowledge, water is even more fun. In this interview, Lukas Ziehm from DLRG North Rhine explains what really matters when it comes to safety in and around the water, how to react correctly in an emergency, and why being able to swim is one of the most important skills of all. Whether you’re just relaxing in the water or actively taking part in water sports, this knowledge will help you keep yourself and others safe.

Caravanning & water sports: pure freedom!

With your campervan, you are right where the water is. By a lake, on the coast or by a river – you can decide on the spur of the moment where your next adventure begins. Your board, kayak or diving kit are always with you, and you’re more independent than ever before.
From 28 August to 6 September 2026, the world’s leading trade fair for mobile travelling, CARAVAN SALON, in Düsseldorf will be showcasing even more ideas for your mobile water sports adventure. And with a bit of luck, you could even attend for free: take your chance to win tickets for you and your companion now, discover the latest caravans and motorhomes at the event, and get inspiration for your next trip to the water!

Diving without risk: How to stay safe

The underwater world is fascinating – but it demands respect. Your safety depends on a few clear basic rules: from choosing the right buddy to equalising the pressure and making a controlled ascent. If you know these rules and take them seriously, you’ll dive more safely and feel more relaxed. Find out what really matters.

Ocean Race Atlantic 2026: Offshore racing with a purpose

1 September 2026 marks the start of the Ocean Race Atlantic – a top-class transatlantic sprint featuring foiling IMOCA yachts. Team Malizia, led by Boris Herrmann, will of course be taking part.

What’s particularly exciting is that each crew must consist of an equal number of women and men – a milestone for gender equality in offshore racing. During the race, the teams collect important climate data and set an example for sustainability and ocean conservation.
